Steam Biomass Boiler: The Sustainable Solution for Industrial Decarbonization

Part 1: What Is a Steam Biomass Boiler?

A steam biomass boiler is an industrial steam generator that burns biomass fuel such as wood chips, palm shells, rice husks, corn cobs, and agricultural residues to produce saturated or superheated steam for manufacturing, heating, and power generation. This technology enables facilities with access to biomass feedstock to cut fuel costs and reduce carbon emissions simultaneously.

In a steam biomass boiler, biomass is fed onto a chain grate or reciprocating grate for layer combustion; the high-temperature flue gas passes across water tube or fire tube heating surfaces; water inside the tubes absorbs the heat and converts to steam for distribution to the production line or heating network. Compared with coal-fired boilers, a steam biomass boiler offers carbon-neutral fuel with significantly lower cost volatility; compared with gas or oil-fired units, it provides a strong cost advantage in regions where biomass resources are locally available and inexpensive. For enterprises that generate large quantities of agricultural or wood-processing waste such as rice mills, palm oil refineries, plywood factories, or food processing plants. The steam biomass boiler turns what was once a waste disposal challenge into a cost-effective energy strategy, making it a cornerstone technology in sustainable industrial transformation.

Part 2: ZOZEN Steam Biomass Boiler Product Lineup

ZOZEN manufactures several series of steam biomass boiler, each designed for specific capacity ranges and fuel characteristics.

SZL series biomass-fired steam boiler

The SZL series is a chain grate steam biomass boiler with a horizontal double-drum and vertical-layout structure. The front of the boiler body is surrounded by water-cooled walls, while independent air chambers on the chain grate ensure complete and even combustion across a wide range of biomass fuels — from wood chips to rice husks and palm shells. It offers a thermal capacity of 6 to 35 t/h, working pressures from 1 to 2.5 MPa, and steam temperatures from 184°C to 350°C. Thermal efficiency exceeds 86%. This series is widely applied in heating, chemical, food, textile, and wine industries.

DZL series biomass-fired steam boiler

For smaller facilities, the DZL single-drum three-pass steam biomass boiler provides a compact and economical solution. Its threaded smoke tubes with a heat transfer coefficient 1.8 times higher than standard tubes — drive efficient heat exchange within a three-pass water-fire tube structure. It offers a thermal capacity of 2 to 10 t/h, working pressures from 1 to 2.5 MPa, and steam temperatures from 170°C to 225°C. Thermal efficiency exceeds 83%, making this an ideal entry-level steam biomass boiler for operations with limited space and budget.

DZL series biomass-fired horizontal type steam boiler

The DZL horizontal type is a third-generation, independently developed three-drum assembly steam biomass boiler designed for medium-to-large capacity requirements. Its tall furnace, standing 1 to 3 meters high, accommodates non-formed biomass fuels that would clog standard grates, while the ash-blowing device on the tail convection surface enables ash removal without interrupting operation. Full-seal water-cooled membrane walls and a front-back arch design promote stable flame formation and complete combustion. It offers a thermal capacity of 10 to 40 t/h, working pressures of 1.25, 1.6, or 2.5 MPa, and steam temperatures of 194°C, 204°C, or 225°C respectively. Thermal efficiency exceeds 88% — making it well suited for chemical, food, and rubber production environments.

DZW series biomass-fired reciprocating grate steam boiler

The DZW series is a reciprocating grate three-drum steam biomass boiler engineered specifically for high-moisture and loose bulk biomass fuels such as formwork waste, wood chips, and palm shells. The reciprocating grate moves fuel progressively through the furnace, preventing localized ash buildup and maintaining steady combustion even with variable fuel moisture content. It offers a thermal capacity of 15 to 35 t/h, working pressures of 1.25, 1.6, or 2.5 MPa, and steam temperatures of 194°C, 204°C, or 225°C respectively. Thermal efficiency exceeds 86.7%. An intelligent control system enables unattended operation with real-time parameter monitoring, making this series particularly well suited for overseas projects where on-site technical support is limited.

DHL series biomass-fired steam boiler

The DHL series is a corner tube steam biomass boiler with a self-supporting structure that eliminates the need for a heavy steel frame. It offers 20 to 75 t/h with working pressures from 1.25 to 5.4 MPa and the thermal efficiency exceeds 86.8%. This steam biomass boiler provides fast temperature rise, low steel consumption, and strong seismic resistance, making it suitable for power generation and large industrial applications.

Part 3: Applications and Real-World Cases

The steam biomass boiler serves remarkably diverse industries: food and beverage processing for pasteurization, cooking, and evaporation; paper and packaging where mill residues become boiler fuel, turning an environmental liability into an operational asset; textile and dyeing requiring stable steam for fabric processing; building materials such as plywood and cement; pharmaceutical manufacturing needing precise temperature control; and district heating networks supplying heat to hospitals, schools, and residential districts.

Two ZOZEN project cases demonstrate how the steam biomass boiler performs across different sectors and regions:

Case 1: 6 tph SZL for a Plywood Factory in Côte d’Ivoire

A large West African plywood factory generated massive volumes of bark, sawdust, and wood offcuts daily. Rather than treating these as waste disposal costs, ZOZEN supplied the 6 tph SZL series steam biomass boiler , customized with a grate calibrated to local wood waste characteristics and optimized air distribution. The double-drum design with extended flue gas residence time maintains thermal efficiency above 86%, simultaneously solving waste disposal and cutting steam production costs.

Case 2: 10 t/h DZW for a Textile Plant in Karachi, Pakistan:

JB Industries in Karachi faced rising energy costs and unreliable natural gas supply, alongside tightening green supply chain requirements from international buyers. The 10 t/h DZW series steam biomass boiler, with its reciprocating grate designed for cotton stalks, and wood chips, replaced gas dependency with a locally sourced, cost-effective fuel. Thermal efficiency reaches above 86.7%, and the integrated flue gas heat recovery system further improves fuel utilization.

Part 4: Why Choose a Steam Biomass Boiler?

The business case for a steam biomass boiler rests on three compelling pillars. Economically, biomass fuel costs 30–60% less per unit of thermal energy than natural gas in many markets, often delivering a return on investment within 2–4 years. Sustainability-wise, biomass is carbon-neutral across its lifecycle, the CO₂ released during combustion is offset by the CO₂ absorbed during plant growth — directly supporting ESG reporting, ISO 14001 certification, and green supply chain requirements increasingly imposed by international buyers. Energy security-wise, switching to locally sourced agricultural residues insulates facilities from global commodity price volatility and import dependency, as demonstrated by Pakistani textile plants facing unreliable gas supply.

What sets ZOZEN apart in the steam biomass boiler market is the depth of engineering behind each unit. Every boiler is customized to the customer’s specific fuel profile — a critical differentiator because combustion characteristics vary dramatically between wood chips, palm shells, rice husks, and cotton stalks. ZOZEN’s 150,000 m² manufacturing base in Yixing features automated welding lines, full-pressure testing facilities, and precision assembly platforms. Combined with 38 years of boiler expertise, ASME and CE certifications, and over 15,000 completed projects across 100+ countries, ZOZEN delivers fuel-specific engineering, intelligent automation, and reliable global delivery from initial technical consultation and combustion tuning, through on-site commissioning and operator training, to ongoing lifecycle maintenance support.
